Surf Isla Uvita - 20min Boat Trip from Limon

Isla Uvita is a heavy reef break accessible by a 20 minute boat ride from Limon, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The waves are visible from Westfalia beach, so you can get an idea of conditions before committing to hiring a boat to take you there. There are no accommodations on the island, so it’s not a destination… It’s a session. The wave breaks over live reef so take care of your nicks, cuts and scrapes when you get back to shore, and watch for staph infection.

This break is for experienced surfers only. If you haven’t surfed heavy waves with a scary bottom before, this isn’t the place to start. If you are a beginner, don’t bother. Isla Uvita is probably the heaviest left reef wave in Costa Rica and you won’t have fun unless you are in good shape and have charged heaving waves like this before. If you’re ready to charge, here’s the dirt on Isla Uvita…

the wave itself is thick and heavy, with three sections and and a long ride. The wave faces an exposed reef that sits a few feet above sea level, so - not for the faint at heart. If you want to go here, boats can be hired at many of the hotels and restaurants in Limon, ask around and you will find someone to take you there.

I always like videos like this for the “take you there” feeling. Not the glossy surf porn we all overdosed on as groms. This is kind of an imperfect swell and conditions are a little full, it gets bigger and cleaner. The surfing isn’t incredible, but probably closer to reality for a lot of us. You still get a pretty good idea for the place.
